How to Reserve a Company Name in Sri Lanka
Planning to register a company in Sri Lanka? The first step in the process is reserving a name for the company. Keep in mind that there are other types of business registrations in Sri Lanka, such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, and societies. This article is specifically for limited liability companies.
Important Points to Remember
- Name Similarity: If your name is similar to an existing company, it will not get approved. Try to be as unique as possible, and consider adding a word if the name is common.
- Sinhala/Tamil Characters for the Name: You need to use the name as per the English name and not a translation. For example, if your company is “BLUE HOLDINGS,” the Sinhala name should be the pronunciation of “BLUE HOLDINGS,” not a translation.
Step-by-Step Guide to Reserving a Company Name
Step 01 – Create an eROC Account Head to the eROC website and create an account using your personal name, address, email, and phone number.

Step 02 – Verify Your Account eROC will send a verification email to the provided email address with a link to verify the account. Once verified, you are ready to reserve your company name.
Step 03 – Name Reservation Go to the Name Reservation section from the left panel and select the type of company, whether it is a private limited or a public limited company.

Enter the desired company name.
Decide whether you need the words in full or abbreviation at the end:
- For Private Limited: (Private) Limited or (Pvt) Ltd
- For Public Limited: PLC, LTD, or Limited
- For Guarantee Company: LTD, Limited, or (Guarantee) Limited

Once the name is chosen, the system will show whether your name is available or if there are similar names. If the Name is available, you can proceed to the next window.

This window will show fields to enter your company name in Sinhala or Tamil. You can use Unicode, but if the eROC staff can’t read the Unicode, you may need to attach a letter with the Sinhala name in PDF format. Download the template for this here

Also, explain the meaning of any abbreviations if there are any. For example, if your company name is “BLUE S.N.S. HOLDINGS” or “S.N.S. Holdings,” you need to explain what “S.N.S.” stands for. You can include this explanation in the PDF letter or directly in the provided field, like so:
- S – XXXXXX
- N – XXXXXX
- S – XXXXXX
Once this is done, you will move to the page where you can attach any documents related to the Name Reservation. At this stage, you don’t need to provide details of the directors or shareholders unless your application is for a Limited by Guarantee (Association), which we will cover in a separate blog article.
Step 04 – Payment for Name Reservation The payment can be made using a VISA or MASTERCARD, and the cost will be shown on the right side of the panel. Note that the cost may vary slightly due to bank charges, so the final amount will be Rs. XXXXX.
Once the payment is done, wait for the Registrar General of Companies to grant approval or provide a reason for resubmission if the name is not approved.
Happy registering!
